The Seven Network has announced its new terrestrial FTA digital channel will be launched in October and is expected to be a general entertainment channel. The Ten Network recently launched its new terrestrial FTA sports channel ONE HD which has seen considerable success so far, no doubt bolstered by the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix in March.

Network 9 wont be launching their extra SD channel until at least July, according to industry sources. Meanwhile the High Court has ruled in favour of ICE TV in their ongoing fight with the 9 Network.

Way back in 2006, Network 9 took ICE TV to court over the use of their broadcast information to create the ICE TV EPG. ICE won that case in 2007, Nine appealed and won in 2008 and now ICE has taken the matter to the High Court and has won after a 6 month long battle.

Nine’s main objection was that the ICE TV EPG allowed some PVRs to skip ads (Topfield, Beyonwiz). After watching this legal battle from the sidelines for the last few years, Freeview decided not to risk future legal action by Macrovision (Gemstar EPG owners) for using the US Gemstar “grid” EPG without a license, and are currently in licensing negotiations with the company.
